A few weeks into my DFW at UWB/CC, I was given a project by one of the Communications and Media librarians, Nia, to do some housekeeping details on her LibGuides page. The LibGuide was inherited by Nia when she began her tenure at UWB and she's always wanted to spruce it up, making links relevant and keeping all information up to date.
What are academic LibGuides? According to Springshare, LibGuides host a range of resources, curated by librarians, for easy access and focused content for students. Academic librarians work closely with Professors to put together specific resources for students in classes that will meet the students' learning interests based in specific subject matter. It is important that all information and links work properly for students, so this is where I come in.
I've navigated the entire LibGuide page to familiarize myself, and I listed a lot of links that didn't have websites attached to them, or just plainly linked to a different, non-relevant URL all together. The next step was to identify if I should be actively searching for other URL's and websites to replace the ones that no longer work. After consulting with Nia, it was decided that I would initially delete any links that are no longer working and keep it simple, in terms of a general housekeeping sense.
There are sections in Nia's LibGuide that will need more attention in terms of content building in the future. Some of this content is designed to provide news to diverse sub-groups, including Womens, Gay, African-American, and other local or worldly news sources with specifically tailored and curated news for their audience. It is important for these diverse groups to have community and worldly resources. Which sources to replace old and dead links will will be tended to in the future, and will likely involve talking with individuals in those communities who can provide the best information and resources that are helpful and relevant to students.
For now, I am just cleaning house and dumping old URL's that no longer work! I'll keep you all posted as I continue to update the LibGuide.
