I've started sorting through the biography section as well as narrative voices (non-fiction) section and pulling books that are social justice oriented. The way we have decided to identify the books is how well they speak to the reader on taking action. It was helpful to have this definition narrowed down because otherwise I could see myself grabbing just about anything that looked like it had something to do with social justice. It has been an interesting two weeks of really looking at the books. Some of the books I found are pretty beaten up and need to be replaced. Others are duplicate copies of one book that I was able to leave one in their original section, and put the other copy aside to create the new collection. In addition to pulling many books out for the collection, I am keeping a running record on an excel spreadsheet that is coded by each type of book. I am keeping lists of each book title, author, ISBN, and I give a small description of the book. This is helpful for the librarian to be able to understand which parts of social justice are established in the collection, which are limited, and what could be built up for the sake of diversity.
