The final two weeks were spent rounding out the quarter and finishing up anything that had lose ends. I finished putting the Social Justice Collection together in the Non-Fiction section of the library. I kept a running list of all books in the collection and put them in subject categories so that we could see how many books were in each. This was beneficial for two reasons: one is to make sure that we have adequate representation of each category and another is to create a wish list of books to add to the collection. It was also a great opportunity to weed through old books that are a bit worn or out of date. It was eye-opening to see how many books represent the Black American experience in civil rights vs other civil rights categories such as environmental and related health rights. We can also see that there is an opportunity here to build up more Indigenous and Native American civil rights literature as well as Asian American civil rights literature. Surprisingly, I found a few more disability rights books than I assumed I would.
The quarter is coming to an end, which means that my time at Eckstein will also be coming to an end for the DFW. I plan to volunteer for the rest of the school year in the library, and eventually get into the substitute pool so I can continue to build my knowledge and skill level as a school librarian. Both of the projects I took on this year have been of great value and I appreciate the experience.
