Week 1-2: Planning and Research Stages

Greetings summer friends! I hit the ground running a few weeks ago with this DFW and I couldn't be more excited for what's to come. I am a part of a research team for Read-a-Rama, which is a literacy-building program developed by Dr. Michelle H. Martin and Dr. Rachelle D. Washington to introduce and build reading and comprehension literacy with children of ages 4-11 all year around with story-telling through read-alouds, arts & crafts, and music and movement. Read-a-Rama engages children of all backgrounds, especially those who are under-represented.

Read-a-Rama core beliefs (via their website: About Read-a-Rama)

All children can reach their highest potential; All programming should embrace all types of diversity;

100% engagement is good for all types of learners;

Serving the whole child and their families brings positive results;

Parents and guardians are a child’s first teacher and should always be involved in their child’s learning;

Meaningful relationships between adults and children around books and literacy-rich activities positively contribute to children’s learning;

Programs must engage community resources—human, organizational, financial, and more—to model literacy and celebrate lifelong learning;

The creation and growth of home libraries positively contribute to literacy development;

Cultural literacy comes through engaging community resources, such as field trips to local museums, businesses, and organizations;

Cultural competence is necessary for the staff and volunteers working in Read-a-Rama programs.

During the past two weeks of my DFW, I have been tasked with the following:

  • Work on definitions of "literacy" in the first research paper published on behalf of Read-a-Rama, that will help us build the research questions for this next research inquiry and study.

  • Study "Every child Ready to Read" articles and papers that mention the literacy framework for ages 0-5.

  • Look for a published toolkit for "Every Child Ready to Read" and find other published tool kits for other ages.

We meet again in a few weeks as a team, so I am eager to share what I have done. Stay tuned!
